Euro 2016 betting tips: the safe bets and outside punts for the tournament

On the eve of Euro 2016, we run through the best bets to back as the first game in France fast approaches. From hopeful long shots to absolute bankers, we offer enough tips to keep you interested throughout the tournament.
*All odds courtesy of Betfair

Safe bet: Germany to win Euro 2016 at 4/1
The world champions go into the tournament as second favourites owing to France's home advantage. Joachim Low has lost none of the players who were so impressive in Brazil, and easily boast the best XI players on paper.

Outside bet: Croatia to win Euro 2016 at 25/1
Croatia finished as runners-up in qualifying behind winners Italy, but with players of the calibre of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mario Mandzukic, the Croats could spring a few surprises in France.

Safe bet: Antoine Griezmann to be top goalscorer at 9/1
The tricky striker has evolved into a genuinely world class striker under the tutelage of Diego Simeone. The 23-year-old has scored 32 goals in all competitions this season and is thought to be a £60m target for Manchester United.

Outside bet: Gareth Bale to be top goalscorer at 40/1
Hear us out. At a huge 40/1, the Real Madrid forward is a tempting option for top goalscorer. Chris Coleman has built Wales' hopes around the 26-year-old, who will play a more central role for his nation than he is used to for his club. England aside, Slovakia and Russia are both unfancied minnows who Bale could run riot over.

Safe bet: Paul Pogba to be player of the tournament at 10/1
The Juventus star has become a global icon since being allowed to leave Manchester United, and there is a feeling that the box-to-box midfielder is well-placed to take the tournament by storm.

Outside bet: Sergio Ramos for player of the tournament at 40/1
For the reigning European champions, Spain have been miraculously dismissed as contenders to retain their trophy in France. But it would be no surprise if Vicente Del Bosque's side quietly, but assuredly, passed through into the latter stages of the tournament. Guaranteed to start, Ramos' price is well worth a flutter and could prove shrewd if Spain play anywhere near to their potential.

Safe bet: Mesut Ozil most assists at 10/1
Another obvious pick, but Ozil's enthusiasm for laying on goals for teammates shows no sign of abating. The German was on track to break the Premier League record for assists this season, ultimately falling one short to end his tally on 19. Assuming Germany progress deep into the tournament - when don't they? - then expect the playmaker to be there or there abouts come the end of the tournament.

Outside bet: Kevin De Bruyne most assists at 20/1
The 24-year-old's untimely injury de-railed Manchester City's title challenge; such was the impact of the Belgian's debut season in England. Along with Eden Hazard, De Bruyne will be Belgium's primary provider at Euro 2016. With Romelu Lukaku, Christian Benteke and Divock Origi on hand to finish chances, De Bruyne's impeccable delivery should yield plenty of goals for the Red Devils.

Patriotic punt: Dele Alli most assists at 40/1
Dele Alli has quickly established himself as one of England's chief creative threats and 40/1 on Alli notching up the most assists looks tasty. If Roy Hodgson chooses to play Alli in his favoured position behind the striker then the 20-year-old should play a prominent part in England's attacking third.

Special bets: Manchester United to be top scoring Premier League team at 11/2
One of many special markets available to bet on at Euro 2016. Liverpool have the joint-highest number of players represented at the tournament, but how many of them will find the back of the net? Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford should all play some part in their respective team's campaigns, and will all be expected to find the back of the net. If he plays, Marouane Fellaini will boost your chances of landing the bet.
